Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are a 6-12 public school serving approximately 600 students of diverse backgrounds in a high-need area of the Bronx. We strive to foster community and enrich our students’ education with hands-on learning whenever possible. One initiative we started two years ago was a plant exchange; members of our school community brought in houseplants to exchange amongst themselves. Last year, our librarian did a fundraiser to provide more plants for our students, and it was a huge success. We received over 100 tiny plants that students repotted in a planting party. We gave the plants away right before Mother’s Day; our students were overjoyed! They loved learning about horticulture while getting their hands dirty and collaborating with one another, then having a gift for their mothers. Everyone at school knows me as the local green thumb; I’m always adding plants to our common areas.

Plants are not just decorative; they always bring a smile, and caring for them mirrors what we do as educators–nurture a being into reaching their full potential.

We need your help to make this year’s plant fair even bigger! We would like to bring the joy of indoor gardening to even more students and bring even more smiles on Mother’s Day. Every dollar you contribute will bring us closer to this goal. We thank you in advance for helping spread plant love to our community.
