Flood Books, Books, and More Books Back Into Our Classroom!

My students need new bookshelves and leveled books to meet their needs for reading. Our bookshelves and many books were damaged or destroyed due to the flooding in our school.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are facing a very difficult time in their lives due to the devastation of the Louisiana Flood of 2016. My school was among the many that was impacted by the flooding leaving a major loss of teaching needs for my classroom. Our students lost everything and were forced to leave their homes, leaving some in shelters. The students I work with come from high risk and low economic backgrounds. Our students are given free breakfast and lunch.

My students come from such diverse backgrounds and need diverse learning techniques and strategies to help them succeed in an ever changing world we live in.

I want to put the love of learning into their vocabulary and help them bounce back from such an enormous tragedy. The flooding of 2016 isn't going to hold us back from what we can achieve and become!

My Project

A love for reading is hard to develop unless you have the right tools! My students come from a very diverse community with a variety of backgrounds. The love of reading comes from having a variety of texts to choose from within your own reading level. Students being able to choose their own books can truly change their mindset of reading. It helps them build on vocabulary, but also sets them up for success because it's differentiated to their specific needs.

We need books to flood back into our classroom, so we can be successful!

I want to create a successful reading environment to help each student succeed this year. In order to do that I need a diverse set of books to expose them to. The key to success in my reading class is to create diversity and differentiation for my students. By the end of the year, they will have a love for reading just by being able to choose their texts and having the right tools!
