My Students

Math is as much instilling a mindset as it is teaching a skill set. For years I have had parents and students tell me stories of their struggles over math homework."That is not how my teacher taught it" is a common line.

My fifth grade students are inspired by technology to take their learning to new levels.

The class is made up of various learning types from English language learners to the academically accelerated. They like to be challenged yet feel comfortable. The iPad instruction will provide a sense of security for some and motive and inspire others to keep learning.

My Project

I envision that the instruction be done at home by having students watch an instructional video and make an entry in their notebook. This allowing class time for application of the skill. An iPad will be a helpful resource for me in my prep time for instruction. I can easily create a video and then post it on my website for students to watch at home. By doing this at home, students are comfortable attempting some example problems with no one watching how long it took or how many times they went back to the video to repeat instruction. At the end of the notebook entry students will write a reflection on what they learned, what they understand, what they may need help with, and specifically where they got stuck. In hopes to eliminate the "I can't do it" attitude that often clouds their confidence. The next day the whole class immediately starts with application of the math skill. Parents will no longer be frustrated and kids won't be in tears.

By flipping the classroom, we will be seeking to create more independent, confident learners.

I will be increasing my time facilitating application, students will be working at their level and pace and feeling more confident doing so.
