Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to read and write? All you had to do was sound out words and you were on your way to reading and writing, a luxury hard to come by for my Deaf students.

My students attend a school for the Deaf in New York, which specializes in meeting the specific needs of Deaf students and provides them direct access to information.

Within the school they can engage in direct conversations with their peers, teachers, and others. Outside of school they are limited. My students take in and express information amazingly "through the air" using sign language but have difficulty taking in and expressing information using written language. Each student is unique and each tries his or her best to excel.

My Project

I am requesting 6 FLIP video camcorders with tripods for my classroom, which will greatly impact my students' literacy skills in a new and exciting way. They will be able to access literacy in an expressive and visual way, which comes natural to them. The FLIP camcorders will allow my students to see their literacy skills grow as the year progresses in which their confidence in literacy will be boosted. My students will be able to FLIP right into literacy without getting tied up with written language. Often, Deaf students attain comprehension but when limited to written language cannot really reveal the knowledge they have gained. When that occurs, those students seem as not having learned anything. The videos produced from the FLIP camcorders will be proof they comprehend and can improve.

This project is so important because technology provides everyone a vast array of opportunities especially Deaf students.

My students learn their best with visual information and are absolutely motivated to learn through technology. The FLIP camcorders will empower my students and they will be that much closer to reaching their highest potential.
