Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How many times have you started a sentence with "Do you remember when...."? Or wished you could replay a moment from the past? Have you ever wished you had a video of your mother or grandfather telling you the story of their childhood? A Flip camera would allow my students to document these moments.

I teach a collection of students who less than four years ago came from over 40 different native countries.

They are exceptionally passionate, creative and- so importantly- incredibly inquisitive. My students want to learn and explore and investigate. As recent immigrants, my students work toward second language acquisition through content-based projects. In my Humanities class, students tackle the important questions and issues brought up in the first half of United States history and literature. In upcoming units we will be dealing with race, culture and immigration and working with historical cases and literature to make connections with our world today and the future. By bringing authentic real world connections into the classroom, and by using technology and story-telling, it will be a chance for students to become more involved and connected than they might not have otherwise. I want to inspire and compel them as well as to motivate them to work creatively and meaningfully.

My Project

To work on a project on immigration and oral histories, I am asking for a Flip camera and supplies so that students, working individually and in groups, can make authentic connections with the subject matter in class and in their own lives. This camera is easy enough to use that even students who are not skilled in technology will be able to find success and it is easy enough to use that there will not be tons of post-production work. Included in this project are cables and extra battery pack in order to ensure success and no extra costs. This camera will later be used in on-going projects with students to give them choice in how they choose to create work, in use in documenting their work, and to further used to model certain projects and experiences for classes and students to come.

Everyone has a story to tell and putting a face to an experience or an event helps to make it come alive.

This camera would help students to document their lives- whether it be in class during a project, doing oral histories with community members, or working creatively. This camera will be put to its fullest in terms of use and quality reflective work. It will not only help to make learning fun but to make it meaningful.
