My Students

My students attend a Title I school in Far Rockaway, Queens. They are amazing Pre-K through 8th grade students. As one of the speech pathologists in The School By The Sea, my students have a wide range of speech and language goals. These incredible students come from diverse backgrounds with varied educational experiences. They come to every speech therapy session with a smile on their face and are eager to achieve their goals. Alternative seating would greatly assist them in their pursuit of their goals. Flexible seating will provide them with an opportunity to choose a seat that works best for their needs and allows them to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.

My students need flexible seating options to increase their focus and allow them to feel empowered and comfortable!

My Project

My students will be given the opportunity to choose the type of seat they would like to use when they arrive at speech. Currently they sit in traditional seats around a small round table, which is restrictive and at times uncomfortable. Having each child choose if they want to sit the floor and use a small stand, use a bouncy band or sit on a ball will give them the freedom to pick what works best for them. Studies have also suggested that students who participate in short bouts of physical activity and movement within the classroom have more on-task behavior.

There have been many studies showing the benefits of flexible seating including, an increased oxygen flow to the brain, an increase in keeping young minds more alert and focused, and improved willingness to participate in group discussions.
