Flexing Our Problem Solving Skills

My Students

My students come from a low-income community in Los Angeles. Our school is a high poverty site, where 100% of our students get free and reduced lunch. Considered a Title I school, we have students that experience an achievement gap due to their socioeconomic status and the effects of such factors.

Although we may reside in a community that lacks resources, we are so blessed to be in a school community that fights to beat the odds.

And as my students begin to see that their education is valued, they'll soon experience the truth that they too are a vital part of their communities.

My Project

I'm taking a leap of faith and attempting flexible seating this year! Although I'm quite apprehensive about the process, I believe that these materials will help me learn how to better meet each of my students' individual needs. All my 1st grade students have different learning styles and I want to create environments for my students to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially!

Your donation will provide opportunities for my students to practice healthy choice-making, build resilience in regulating their own emotions, and commit to restoring peer relationships so that they can see themselves as calm, diverse, and emotionally healthy individuals.

The rug and lamp will set the environment for the calming corner, and where the mood chart and stress balls will be used as resources to help regulate their emotions. The flexible seating options will be another resource students can utilize in order to maintain their academic focus. Because there is a limited number of resources, I want to teach my students how to work together in order to share our materials in an inclusive manner. My students will learn how to be productive members of society in a world where tolerance and acceptance is waning. Your help will truly make a difference!
