My Students

"Reading is a way for me to expand my mind, open my eyes, and fill up my heart." - Oprah Winfrey

My fourth graders are a group of nine and ten year old students who are excited about reading, learning new things, and are working to enhance their growth mindset in order to persevere through difficult tasks.

Although we are a small school district, we have a wonderful school made up of students, parents, teachers, and administrators who wholeheartedly believe in working together to increase student achievement. We are a small school in Arkansas. One hundred percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of our students live in a low poverty area and do not participate in extracurricular activities outside of school due to circumstances beyond their control.

We are continuing to improve upon our teaching strategies in order to be more culturally responsive towards the diverse makeup of our student population. We want our students to know that all means all when it comes to their academic and emotional success.

My Project

The makeup of our student population continues to grow and change. As an educator, I strive to help my students see themselves in the books we read; this will also aid in helping with their financial literacy learning. I love to expose my students to a variety of texts while in a comfortable environment. These resources will allow my students the opportunity to be comfortable while reading and learning, expose them to new books, and increase their financial literacy learning.

Diversity allows students the opportunity to broaden their vantage point and see life in a variety of ways.

I truly believe that providing my students the opportunity to read a variety of texts in financial learning will help them to learn vital skills such as saving, savings goals, interest, borrowing, and opportunity cost. These books will also allow us to spend time on many standards, including money. Money is a difficult concept for some of my students, and I believe these books will allow each of my students to gain meaningful experiences that can strengthen their current skills. Through more engaging techniques that strive to meet the needs of all of our students, we are seeing relationships strengthen, an increase in trust and excitement over learning, and increased student achievement.

The books in this project will allow my students to engage in meaningful conversations, find comparisons between themselves and the characters in the books, and provide opportunities for them to write about what they've read. The flexible seating will allow my students to read in a more relaxed and comfortable setting and can also be used for small groups when students are engaging in reading discussions. We all learn better when we're comfortable, and these seating options will provide us with several choices that will maximize the learning process.
