My Students

Who is miserable sitting in the same chair all day? After sitting through a 2 day workshop, I realize why so many students rock in their chair or stand while they work. My whole body ached halfway through the day which took all of my focus. This has inspired me to transform my classroom into a much more comfortable learning space for my gifted 3rd & 4th graders. My students are advanced learners who tend to be bursting with energy and enthusiasm for learning but are expected to think deeply through creative problem solving challenges. Each year I have a handful of kids that struggle with focus or anxiety. By allowing more comfortable seating options, I hope to improve concentration and learning for my spectacular students.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. My students choose a location in the classroom that works for them because making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. They love having a choice about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they must sit in the same desk all day every day.

The learning environment plays a key roll in student success.

I have requested 2 yoga balls, a wobble seat and chair bands to help my students fidget while staying focused and productive in class. Students will be able to use these seats while working independently, with a partner or while collaborating with a group.

These additions to our learning environment will ensure each student each day will have a unique seat supporting academic achievement for all. I am thrilled with how the flexible seats have already increased student attentiveness and attitude about learning.
