My Students

I am a special education teacher. I have a diverse group of eager to learn fifth grade students in New York City. Some of my students are special needs learners who require accommodations to achieve academic success. Sometimes that means I have to incorporate a song into a lesson and other times I may have to draw a picture or create a chart.

Many times I have to incorporate movement and exercise into my lessons, especially for my students with ADHD.

Sitting still is a challenge many of my students face every day. It is not uncommon to see my students running in place or dancing during lessons throughout the school year. I have to make sure that my students move and get their jitters out. I believe school should be interesting and engaging. Incorporating movement in our day makes my students enjoy school.

My Project

Many of my students with special needs have a difficult time sitting in their seats, especially for long periods of time. Students arrive at 8 in the morning and leave after 2:00pm.

Hokki stools will allow my students to be active throughout their long school day.

They need an alternative to the hard chairs that are in my classroom. One of my students shared that she saw these cool chairs in her old school called Hokki Stools. As a class, we researched the stools and my students decided it would be great to have some in the classroom. Hokki stools are active seating that would be so beneficial to my students, especially those with ADHD. My students have complained several times in the past about not being able to move and wishing they can let out some energy.
