This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a fifth-year teacher in Baltimore City. My 5th-grade classroom, which is in a small school located in Southwest Baltimore, thrives on student happiness and success. Each and every student who walks through our door brings his or her own set of inspirations and life experiences, and they inspire me every day to be the best I can be. About 86.3% of our students are on the free or reduced-price meal plan, and 25.2% are English Language Learners.

I wholeheartedly believe that every single one of my students has what it takes to be successful, and I am willing to try whatever it takes to get them where they need and WANT to be.

I love seeing our students, throughout the whole school, walk in with smiles on their faces, and I will try anything I can think of to ensure those smiles remain there. After all, school is all about learning and growing together.

My Project

As a fifth grade reading teacher, every year I have a group of reluctant students who "don't like to read." I have found that offering my students reading materials such as magazines helps them feel a little bit more comfortable and willing to read.

Reading is essential to the success of students, and when given the choice to read various texts, students get excited and reading should be EXCITING.

However, as anyone would agree, reading is significantly less enjoyable when you are not comfortable. I am hoping that with this project my students will not only have new reading materials, but also new places and spaces to read these in. Flexible seating is popular in classrooms everywhere. However, I have found that my students are most successful in enjoying their reading and staying focused on their reading when they have the opportunity to choose their seats.

It is my hope to provide my students with these new materials starting on day one of the school year. I want them to walk in and feel at home and feel comfortable so that they are willing to take chances on their learning and their education.
