My students are a very diverse and wonderful group of kiddos. I teach face to face Culinary Arts, Culinary Practicum, and CTE SpEd Interior Design students (medically fragile and special needs). I would say all the students I have are on free or reduced meal options, and from low income families. My room has tables and chairs now with a few flexible seating options (which they all love, but my SpEd kiddos especially), and I would love to give them a comfortable safe space where they feel like they can work better or just have a relaxing moment.
My Project
I know I work better when I’m sitting in a more comfortable seating arrangement, and from the few flexible options I have now, my students tend to work better. We use them as either a special reward seating or a calm down place for my SpEd students. My other kiddos just use them as a safe space to do work, read, relax, etc. Students come sometimes even at lunch just to sit and eat in a comfortable safe space. I just really want them to be able to feel like they have a place, that when they are in my room, they can call their space.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
