My Students

I teach in a large, public, inner-city school. My students are wonderful third graders who struggle with learning due to a learning, language, attentional or emotional need. Learning a typical curriculum-differentiated to minimize the effects of their disabilities-the students are becoming problem solvers, reflective communicators, and active citizens of the school, community, and world.

In the class flexibility and responsiveness to our own and others' needs is a must.

For many of my students, sitting at a desk all day does not address their sensory, motor or attentional needs or allow them to move as they need. Since the needs of my students are varied, so should the work spaces. I am looking to provide flexible work spaces to my students. We work in small groups throughout the day. I want to give them choice and control over their work space. Studies show that classroom environment is important to how students engage, participate, and stay involved in their learning.

It is my hope that respecting my students' choice, comfort, and meeting their need for movement, novelty, or different types of physical support will help my students feel more empowered, respected, and engaged.

My Project

The products that I have selected will give my students seating options and a way to use their energy while staying focused. The seating I am requesting respects my students' needs for smaller group work, support, comfort, novelty, and movement. My students' needs vary-some students need physical support, others need comfort, some need the ability to move, to stand, others need choice and novelty. We work independently or in small groups a great deal in my classroom. I want to create an environment that respects their needs, provides comfort, and an opportunity for students to choose the seating and space that works best for them. The seating that I have requested will allow me to create safer, smaller learning spaces within the classroom.
