My Project

Studies show that students feel safer in classroom where they are more comfortable, emotionally and physically. My students love choice. My students want to use flexible seating everyday. We have some flexible seating that I have created with desks at multiple heights and a rug, but there are no comfy spaces where they can sit to do work or increase their emotional well being. Since I have had some flexible seating, they have academically done better because not everyone learns the same way and students need different kinds of seating. My student's social emotional learning is improving because flexible seating allows freedom while learning. They are encouraged to take turns in different locations and with different seating options.

My goal is to create a flexible seating space for working that would mimic the real world and create safety in the classroom which would contribute to their overall well-being and increase their academic performance.

Having a couch would be a great alternative place for students to do their work and settle in. I believe the space has to be welcoming and accessible to everyone. Couches create conversations. So I think having a couch would increase listening and speaking skills that students really need. It would also increase focus because everyone would want to sit on the couch.

My students are special. They are working on their emotional wellness, writing books on how to love yourself, and working together to create a safe, fun environment for everyone. Overall, a couch would improve their health, help foster community, sharpen communication, help with sensory input, and make learning fun.
