My Project

In our special education classroom, we have 12 incredible students—all of whom are sensory-seeking, diverse, and individualized learners. Every day, they enter our supportive classroom community, where they feel empowered in their learning, especially when given the power of choice through flexible seating. Alongside my amazing co-teacher, I have the privilege of teaching all academic content, including math, reading, social skills, and explicit instruction in self-regulation. Our students show up each day eager to grow their brains, and we strive to provide an environment that fosters their success.

At the start of every class, we ask, "How do you want to learn today?" This simple question allows students to choose a flexible seating option based on what their bodies need at that moment.

Some may focus better during math while gently bouncing on a Lakeshore Flex-Space Balance Ball Seat, while others might rotate through skill stations using a chair with Bouncy Bands Wiggle Wobble Chair Feet to help with movement regulation. Or when we are learning about our new strategy for self-regulation a student may choose to sit on the carpet using the ECR4Kids The Surf Portable Lap Desk with Cushion.

Flexible seating is one of the most effective ways I’ve found to empower students in their learning, giving them autonomy over their environment and helping them stay engaged. With your support, we can continue to create a classroom where every student feels comfortable, focused, and ready to succeed.
