My Students

Students at P.K. Y. D. R. School are part of an experiment in learning. Chosen from all over our county, my students represent the diverse cultural backgrounds and include 50% low-income families. In the art room, students get to make creative choices about their art and learning.

My Project

While every student has a seat in the K-5 Art Room, our artists need more options for student seating than sitting in a standard desk chair or on the cold, hard linoleum floor. At P. K. Yonge in the K-5 Learning Communities, our teachers know that flexible seating is a research proven tool to increase student engagement, comfort, and ultimately this contributes to success in students' academic performance.

Unlike the K-5 Learning Communities, the K-5 Art Room accommodates every K-5 student from little Kindergarteners who are 36" tall to the tallest of 5th graders who may be 5' 5" or taller.

As a result, standard desk chairs may not be super comfortable for every student. Many students struggle with sitting still and may benefit from a chair that allows them to wobble and rock while they learn.

At times throughout the school year, a student may feel more comfortable sitting on a special color wheel rug where they can spread out a bit (solo or with a friend) instead of sitting at their standard desk chair in their usual table group. Additionally, the color wheel rug is a visual reminder throughout the year to help students remember color mixing and the color spectrum.
