Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a new school, we currently have students in kindergarten and first grade. My students come from all walks of life. They are English as a new language learners, first-generation Americans, immigrants from around the globe, students with IEPs, and students with stories, imagination, ideas and joy.

My students love to pretend, dance, make music, and to use their voices, hands and bodies to imagine and create new theatrical worlds.

One thing I love about teaching theatre is that it provides a differently structured learning environment that allows my students to express knowledge in a variety of ways. As a school with many English language learners, our kids need opportunities to express their vast knowledge in non-traditional ways. Theatre gives them the space to do so.

My Project

We are a brand new school, in our second year of operation. Our students, many of whom are ENL leaners (English as a New Language), use theatre class as an opportunity to express their ideas and thoughts with confidence through movement, acting, puppetry, design and storytelling as they continue to build their English fluency. As a new school, we are building our theatre program from the ground up, and having flexible seating benches will help our young theatre makers in a variety of ways.

For example, flexible seating will allow our students the choice to sit in a place that will help them to do their best focusing while learning in class.

Additionally, flexible seating is useful in a theatre classroom because it empowers students to explore different performance space configurations. Being able to manipulate our seating allows the students' imaginations to run wild as they consider how the audience can enjoy and be engaged in our performances.
