Flexible Seating for Maximum Learning

My students need six bean-bag chairs, four standing desks, and three yoga exercise balls to provide comfortable learning options for our classroom that encourage student engagement.

My Students

My students attend a suburban high school of about 2400 students and not unlike many teens, they struggle with engagement from time to time.

Recently, I had the opportunity to move from traditional desk seating to tables and chairs, and I've witnessed the positive impact that this more flexible form of seating has had on my students and their learning.

Students enjoy freedom from the confinement of a desk and the ability to move to interact with their peers and even enjoy isolating themselves during class work time.

My Project

Current educational research indicates that flexible classrooms in which students have multiple choices for seating supports interaction with classmates, individual exploration, and student engagement.

This research shows that in schools where flexible classrooms are implemented, students:

-are happier and more engaged

-demonstrate improved academic performance

-are more likely to actively participate in their learning

These resources will allow my students to actively choose from among several seating options in our classroom. "Plush" seats will provide a relaxing break from the confines of traditional desks, and standing desks and exercise balls will allow for increased movement while learning. By creating a more comfortable classroom space, we will maximize student learning.
