My Project
My students sit in uncomfortable, inflexible, heavy metal chairs for 90-minute class periods daily. These seats are anti-ergonomic and hinder focus. In the same way that movie theaters invest in comfortable seats to aid moviegoers in paying attention, I hope to improve my students' comfort and efficiency through flexibility.
Diverse, flexible seating options will improve classroom instruction and engagement by increasing student choice through comfort.
Students can choose between colorful ergonomic variants of lounge chairs, traditional chairs, rolling chairs, and stools offering different levels of support for various tasks. Students can alternate seats daily or even throughout the class period based on the assignment. These seats will also allow for the ease of changing seating arrangements during a class period. We can go from group work to whole-class instruction to independent work without the daunting task of moving heavy metal furniture. Lastly, the colorful seating options add vitality, vibrance, and warmth to an environment that can easily become mundane and drab.
My students show up with open minds and willing hearts to engage in content. My students are eager to flex and push their minds to new heights. I believe flexible seating is a supportive, tangible, equitable way to increase students' access to instruction ergonomically.
