Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are part of a magnet program that places creativity, critical thinking, and empathy at the center of everything we do. Throughout their time at our school, students learn to become innovative designers, global collaborators, and knowledge constructors.

My students seek to apply their knowledge and creativity to design never before seen solutions to real-world problems.

They want to feel that there is a purpose and meaning behind what they are doing. They strive to build a strong community within and beyond the classroom.

My Project

As a math (and computer science) teacher, I want students to walk into my classroom and notice that something is different. Often times, students come into my class already having decided that they are not "math or STEM people". Math can sometimes be seen as too difficult of a subject with only one solution. With this project, I hope to create an environment that, along with hands-on lessons, helps to deconstruct students' beliefs that they are not "math or STEM people" by making daily learning more comfortable.

Students learn through multiple modalities, and their physical environment should support their diverse learning approaches.

There are students who simply cannot sit for long periods of time and balance boards can help focus their energy on the task at hand. Other students may prefer sitting on a rug, yoga mat, or yoga ball because it lessens the feeling of being at "school". The flexible seating options will be introduced gradually, but eventually, students will have the freedom to choose the option that best supports their active engagement.

By donating to this project, you are helping to create a learning environment that better reflects and promotes the many different learning needs of my students.
