Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of first and second grade special needs students in the Bronx, NY. It's a self contained bridge classroom with 12 students, 1 teacher, and 3 paraprofessionals. My students face a lot of challenges not only academically but in their personal life as well. It is essential that students not only excel academically, but also gain the appropriate social and real world skills that will facilitate their college and career readiness from this early age.

It is my goal to create a safe, warm, and kind community in my classroom. I strive to facilitate socio emotional student learning through placing an emphasis on building my students' character as well as their skill sets.

My Project

Differentiating a classroom means that you are providing multiple access points to facilitate learning in all of your students. Not only can instruction be differentiated, but so can the environment! Being that I teach in a self-contained, special education classroom, the needs of the students are vast. One of the challenges that my students face is a difficulty controlling their impulses, as well as a heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli.

Flexible seating is a way to allow students to have more freedom to choose which learning area will help them remain the most focused, attentive, and engaged in their learning.

The Ball seating will allow students to get out some of their excess energy in a positive way, which will lead to them being less distracted. Also, it can allow some students to have the sensory stimuli that they need, while still being engage in the lesson.
