My Students

Our school is a therapeutic day school program, the task of which is to provide emotional support and academic opportunities to children who have been unable to succeed in community school settings due to emotional, learning, and behavioral difficulties. The majority of our students live at a residential children's home and are wards of the state.

Our school runs as a trauma-informed program, aiming to help our students grow from their pasts and learn how to cope in effective ways.

Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredible children. Their resiliency, love for learning, and curiosity are truly inspiring. I strive to make my classroom a welcoming and safe community and to help my students explore learning and grow into independent and productive citizens.

My Project

In 2008, Herman Miller did a study which showed that, “giving people some control over their surroundings adds to their sense of well-being.” Flexible seating does just that for my students - gives them some control and choice, which they don't have much of in their chaotic lives.

Childhood trauma creates so many barriers for the children who face it.

One of the biggest barriers in learning for our students is becoming disregulated. When my students are not emotionally regulated, they are often fidgety, unfocused, and overall unavailable for learning.

I am requesting a low circular table and soft seats so students can sit on the floor around the table. I have noticed my students love sitting on our rug, but we don't currently have the structure in place to accommodate that for work times.

I am also requesting a rolling desk chair. My current teacher chair is not only falling apart (the arm rest falls off at least once per day!), but it does not roll very well. Being able to roll around in my chair between groups and tables saves my feet and back from being up all day, and allows me to still confer, visit,
