My Students

My classroom is full of personality, laughter, and lots of learning at all different levels. That is because I teacher 7th and 8th Grade Learning Support. I currently service 17 students from both grade levels. Teaching Middle School is a challenge in and of itself. Working with Special Needs Middle School students is even more of a challenge. Challenge is not a bad thing! That just means we need to get creative in order to meet the needs of each of these students.

The students within my classroom display a wide range of needs: Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbances, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder (just to name a few).

Our school is from a low-income area. We are a district wide free breakfast and lunch school. We also provide a free dinner program. Most of my students live in broken homes or without one (and sometimes both) parents.

Despite any setbacks, these students are why I get up in the morning. Their perseverance and drive shows me that success can come even from the darkest of situations.

My Project

With such a variety of disabilities within my classroom, it is hard to reach the needs of every child. A lot of times, my students feel as if they don't belong with their same age peers. Almost all of my students struggle with keeping focused while working on their grade level curriculum. By providing them with flexible seating, students will be able to fidget but focus on the activities we are completing in class. Students will also learn responsibility by signing a flexible seating contract that upholds the purpose of being provided with alternative seating. Wobble cushions and kick bands will be easily applied to chairs already within my classroom. I am also asking for inflatable empire chairs, yoga mats, and laptop tables so that students can choose to sit in recliner chairs or lay on the floor. Clipboards will make it easier to have a hard surface to write upon. I am hoping that giving this opportunity to my students will allow them to see their full potential and that they DO belong with their same age peers and they CAN complete the work just like their same age peers.
