My Students

I teach an amazing group of third graders. Statistically, the kids at our school come from diverse and trying backgrounds. The neighborhoods that pool into our school have some pretty rough reputations, but our classroom is our safe zone. Our classroom is a place where kids know they will be challenged academically, but more importantly, it's a place they know they will be loved and respected.

My students may be considered "lowest poverty" and "high risk," but they have the biggest hearts of any kids I've ever seen.

They love learning new things, and they get so excited to work on LEARNING! My kids don't have wealthy backgrounds, and it is often a struggle just to come to school in clean clothes with a backpack. That being said, my students are motivated by being given an honest chance to succeed. My kids want to learn, and it melts their hearts when strangers donate their time or money to help them succeed in school. My kids always do their best to live up to any expectations of success!

My Project

We live in a world where individual choice is highly valued, and yet student choice is often silenced in schools. Students crave the freedom to forge their own experiences, but traditional school desks and chairs confine that creativity. Typical classroom furniture isn't conducive to the comfort that students may physically and emotionally need.

My goal is to amplify student choice by allowing students to choose the furniture that best suits their individual needs.

Some students may prefer lounging on a floor pillow with a clipboard. Others may need to get some wiggles out on a wobble stool so they may better focus their minds on academics. Be it sensory discs on the ground or stools perched at a high table, I want my students to feel comfortable in our classroom.
