My students need a variety of furniture to feel more comfortable in their learning environment. They need choices of where to sit while learning as this will instill more confidence and motivation to learn.

We come from a Title 1 Northern California school that serves hard working students that strive to learn and grow. We serve a variety of families including low income families. All my families want the best for their children's education and success in life. While our school is a Title 1 school, my students have a desire to overcome any obstacles put in their path. Some lack the confidence, however I am here to help them discover that they are masterpieces! Intelligent, capable, courageous, kind, brave, and generous. My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and languages. Last year our school had 14 new comers from other countries enroll. I had four in my class and we are expecting the same, if not more. My students come to school every day, some sleepy, some stressed, but either way, excited to learn! Seeing their smiles and receiving their hugs or high fives despite any other problems is what keeps us motivated to be a learning community!
My Project
My students need flexible seating to increase focus, collaboration, communication, and problem solving. Last year I allowed students to sit most of the time out of their desk and students loved it. They worked for it and enjoyed the freedom to pick where they learned best. However, I did not have a variety of seats so most just sat on the ground. This year I want to provide more comfortable spots to learn and more choices. I am asking for a variety of seating furniture such as yoga balls, wobble cushions and stools, and foam mats that will provide students with opportunity to move and sit to learn where they learn best. Research has shown that flexible seating gives students choice and this choice increases engagement and motivation. I am also asking for water bottles as I know students always need water to fuel their energy to learn!
