Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The eighth grade at my school is made up of students with special needs, gifted students and English language learners.

My eighth grade is full of vibrant, excited learners ready for a new challenge each and every day!

My building is a Pre K - eighth grade school, and in every grade and we develop a strong classroom community to support one another.

My students all come from lower income families that struggle each day to make ends meet. Many of these children face poverty and violence on a daily basis that is well beyond what most of us could imagine. Yet, my students do their best to learn. I try my best to give my students a good education and an introduction to the American way of life, but with limited resources there are many things that others consider basic parts of education that I cannot provide without assistance. My school is very limited in the funds that teachers receive for supplies. Teachers go forward and buy their own supplies to help their students have a successful school year.

My Project

This school year I moved into my third different classroom in six years. I haven’t stayed in a room long enough to experiment with different seating options, but this new room is much larger than any I’ve ever had and I’m looking for different ways to utilize all the space. These seating options will allow my students to take charge of their own learning and explore their imaginations. In addition, it will allow us a place to meet in small groups and conference semi-privately. I have noticed that when students feel more comfortable in the classroom they are more engaged in their learning.

My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their classmates when they’re given a choice of where to work.

The products I have chosen will give them additional seating options to help them make better learning choices. The stools offer flexibility for conferencing and for working away from their typical desk. The floor seats will be beneficial for the students who are searching for the ability to move around comfortably while they work. They are lightweight and easy to move around the room. The desk will allow me to discard a desk that is well over 20 years old, has drawers that do not work, and is filled with mouse feces. In addition, I will now be able to pull small groups straight to the desk for quick conferences and tasks.

I have seen how choice can positively affect my students’ work and mood and hope that these additional seating options will help us grow even more.
