My Students

This will be my first year as a part of this school family. We are a school located in a neighborhood in Northern Philadelphia. Our school has begun the process of rebuilding itself, as we are in what is known as a Turnaround Network. This is when the school starts from scratch with almost an entirely new staff. As we work together to rebuild our school, I want to rebuild my first grade classroom. I want to create a strong and nurturing environment for my students to flourish both academically and socially.

I have seen firsthand how these students from this type of environment work and interact, and I want to ensure that I can improve their current experience.

My experience comes from previously working in a first grade classroom in another school in Northern Philadelphia with the same demographic. A big focus in our schools in this type of demographic is behavior management. These children are still so young and are eager to learn, and so I am working towards finding the best ways to work with behaviors so that I can then focus on their education. Please help me as our school works to rebuild our school!

My Project

I want to have a completely flexible seating classroom next year to increase learning through movement. My class this past year used yoga balls as chairs and it really helped reduce the wiggles! My students this year worked harder and were focused thanks to flexible seating. I will be moving down to kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year so the yoga balls will be too big. I have researched different options for smaller students so this will accommodate students that cannot use a yoga ball. I have crates that will hold the playground balls for students to sit on, the stack stools will be for guided reading, the wobble cushions will be used for sitting on the floor with lap trays I have. The organizer and book rack will help with guided reading and station rotation to increase small group learning. This way to learn will be a great way to start my students first learning experience!
