My Students

I am a first year teacher in New Orleans. Many of my fifth graders come from colorful backgrounds and are faced with challenges in and out of the classroom, many of which are beyond their control. Therefore, I am striving to provide my students with a meaningful, welcoming learning environment.

I also look for ways to inspire my students to want to learn and be involved in their own learning.

These students are bright, funny, and incredible. They deserve every educational opportunity this world has to offer. By creating a meaningful learning environment, I want to give them the chance to show the world who they are and what they can accomplish.

My Project

Children need to move and make choices in order to flourish and grow. Flexible seating is a strategy teachers can use to move away from traditional seating options into a choice, student-operated system.

Research has shown that students that participate in flexible seating options participate more often, seem happier and more engaged, and demonstrate grade improvement!

Some of the items I have chosen allow my students to actively pick where they want to sit, especially during independent reading time. I have included wobble cushions and yoga mats on my list to give students variety and choice in the type of setting they choose to read in.

Our classroom also needs some other supplies to ensure that we are set up for a productive year. I have included pencils and erasers because students go through so many of these items throughout the year and I do not want to waste valuable learning time trying to replace a lost or broken pencil. I have also included a set of dictionaries that are small enough for students to keep on their desks to use. These dictionaries will be used to expand their vocabularies and help spell difficult words.

Finally, I have included anchor chart papers and markers. In many of my lessons, I will be giving my students information that I want them to refer back to and anchor charts help with just that! Anchor charts help students review concepts (e.g. compare and contrast, theme, point of view), set expectations (e.g. class rules and norms), and involve students (e.g. creating their own anchor charts, referring back to chart). Anchor charts are created to help students understand what they are learning using student-friendly language.
