My Students

I teach a class of Gifted at High Achieving kindergarten and first grade children. My students are bright and enthusiastic learners. They are warm and loving, but often lack focus and self control. Within the gifted population, there are many children on the autism spectrum. Gifted students with special needs are called "Twice Exceptional". These students are highly intelligent, but do experience difficulty with social emotional skills. They have a difficult time sitting still and tend to display behaviors that are distracting to others (and themselves!). Many children on the spectrum have ADHD as well, making it very hard for them to focus and complete tasks and lessons.

My Project

Our school strives to meet the needs of every type of learner. Teachers are provided with all sorts of academic materials, but supplies and furniture for children with social and sensory needs are often overlooked. It is assumed that gifted children do not need much support in the classroom. However, quite the opposite is true. Twice Exceptional children may learn new concepts quickly and easily, they typically require interventions and different types if learning environments in order to be successful in the classroom, both behaviorally and academically. Flexible classrooms allow students to learn in an environment that promotes optimal development for each individual learner.

I would like to begin creating a flexible classroom by introducing Surf Seats.

These are portable seats that allow students to sit comfortably, anywhere in the classroom!
