My Students

In my 4th grade classroom, students gather in a big circle on the carpet for morning meeting, greeting each other, sharing stories, laughing, and complimenting one another. My students encourage, support and celebrate each other. They are excited when we take part in community projects that help others. Choice time is a favorite of theirs. It is when they learn about something of their choice and then present it to their classmates.

It makes me smile to see how accepting they are of others' learning needs, knowing that learners don't all learn the same way.

They see diversity everyday in our school of grades 3- 5. We are a large school in southern Maine housing ten classrooms at each grade level.

My Project

My students gather daily on the carpet for morning meeting. We also meet on the carpet for reading and writing mini-lessons. It is a hard floor with old carpets. Most do well sitting there but some complain of their backs or body aching. They end up wiggling or trying to lie on the carpet. Then they lose focus and are still not comfortable.

Students will focus better when they are comfortable and have their backs supported.

The flexible seats would be used on the floor. They will give the students the comfort and back support they need. I have spoken with a physical therapist who agrees that the seats will give back support. Students who need them can get them when they come to the carpet. They will sit comfortably and be focused. Students will also have the opportunity to use them during independent work time if they choose to work on the floor. They have washable covers so cleaning will be easy. They stack easily and take up little space. My goal is to eventually have all my students sitting on them for our carpet gatherings.
