My Students

My students are the reason I got into this field. I work in a "tough area" so most people make assumptions about my students, but they could not be more wrong. My students, or as I like to call them, my children, are often stereotyped because of their background, neighborhood or classification, and every year we try to prove everyone wrong. This year alone they brought me to tears with all they accomplished.

I don't have 13 students, I have 13 children.

This is what I tell people when asked if I have children and what in turn tell my students. These kids come into school ready to learn because we work together to make our classroom as fun as possible. However, we are a Title I school and most of our students come in early to eat a good breakfast and stay late at after-school programs. Our school becomes a second home to them. Therefore, because they enter into a second home when they enter my classroom, I want them to have everything they need to succeed because they are special and deserve the best. Every child has the ability to change the world.

My Project

My classroom used to be a office so already space is at a minimum. I used to have 13 desks in there and we couldn't even move. That situation is not fair to students! They need an environment they can actually move around in and feel comfortable in everyday.

This year I switched to flexible seating and it has made all the difference because my students can now move while they work and stimulate their bodies and brains.

Movement is so important for students in helping them learn. Using the wobble seats helps to focus their minds and get their wiggles out. The donut chairs provide another comfy option for someone who wants to be more still. It's all about options! In out class we like to be flexible!
