Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher with a background in Special Education, I believe in creating a classroom environment designed to meet the needs of all students. This ranges from utilizing sensory-friendly classroom modifications such as fluorescent light filters and essential oil diffusers to designing lessons which embrace the creative and insightful mind of my students.

My second graders are highly intelligent and empathetic, and it is my job, as an educator, to provide them with learning experiences which promote not only academic growth but positive social growth as well.

My students are learning at a school which educates them in Mandarin, celebrates an annual Ability Awareness which teaches awareness and acceptance of people from all ability levels, and promotes collaborative group work to complete ELA and STEM lessons.

My Project

Traditional classrooms were pretty standard: desks in rows that would require an entire afternoon to reconfigure, a confining teacher's desk at the front, a blackboard, a country map, and a couple generic teaching posters with yellowing edges. Regardless of the learning activity, students had to stay put all day long, in the same space, with little chance to move due to limited floor space.

Research shows that appropriate educational furniture has positive impact on the ratio of learning and educational progress of students at elementary level (Gilavand, 2016).

Public elementary school teachers have a classroom of diverse learners. Diverse in socioeconomic backgrounds, race, ethnicity, learning styles, as well as their classroom furniture needs. Although some students may succeed sitting in a hard plastic chair at a lone desk, others may need the ability to move and adjust depending on their energy and focus level for the moment.

I aim to create a learning space which provides flexibility in the furniture design. Adjustable tables provide students with the choice of sitting or standing, floor laptop stands allow students to move if they are distracted by their peers, and ball stools provide students with excess energy to control their impulses while maintaining academic attention.
