My Students

I teach 4th grade to inner city students in New York. My students are energetic, curious and creative. Unfortunately our building does not have windows, and we have had issues with our playground over the last few years. This causes a problem for because developmentally it is difficult for them to not have the opportunity to move around. They love playing Just Dance, ball games or movement activities in the class during recess. Allowing for movement breaks throughout the day is key to keeping them engaged and attentive. These scholars have so much potential, but at times when they act out it is simply from not being engaged enough or needing the opportunity to move around. Every child has their own style and way of learning. This past year I had some students who worked really well with regular stools, while others preferred the normal chairs. Having more options for students would be a great addition to our classroom community.

My Project

Flexible seating allows the scholars to be engaged in learning, while also being physically stimulated. Even adults have difficulty sitting for long periods of time whilst remaining focused. Flexible seating is the marriage of comfort and engagement. With different options scholars can choose the one that fits them best.

At this age, (8-10) years old, their little bodies are used to constant movement even when they are paying full attention.

Having flexible seating gives options for you which seat is more comfortable, with fidget bands to help keep focused. With classroom procedures that allows students to pick their seat, and gives them the responsibility to act respectfully in order to keep that privilege. This builds a sense of community and responsibility. The seats are a part of our class supplies and if we misuse or mistreat them it is a loss for everyone.
