My Students

Statistics show that only about two out of every five kids eat a healthy breakfast on a daily basis. In most cases, the ones that do eat breakfast are eating pop tarts or sugar cereals. Part of this is because that is what's available to them; the other part is a lack of knowledge.

Our kids are high achieving students that work extra hard to succeed.

We've attained the highest test scores in our county in reading, math, and science for the last two years. Our school is unique in that we have the highest percentage of military kids in the county. We also have students from the poorest area to the most affluent area in the county. So, I teach in an extremely diverse elementary school to an even more diverse student body.

My Project

Part of my job is to make students aware of not only what a healthy breakfast is, but a healthy diet as well. I understand that this can be a "touchy" subject, so I will use an online program that has been approved by the school board to assist in the health discussions. The pedometers will primarily be used to collect data on a weekly basis to measure the amount of physical activity each student is getting while at school. One of our goals will be to determine if a student is making healthy choices with their food intake. Another goal will be to increase student physical activity over a six week period. That's where the pedometers come in. We will also use the data in our math classes when recording the number of daily steps taken as well as the average number of steps taken on a weekly basis. We will then compare individual data with class data on a week by week basis. This program will not be beneficial without the data.

A goal as an educator is to produce a mentally healthy child.

Why should physical education be limited to gym class? We all have a part in producing mentally and physically healthy children. It starts at home, but educators have an immense responsibility to support parents, grandparents, and guardians in the upbringing of their children.
