This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students regularly deal with trauma in many forms: poverty, homelessness, hunger, abuse, imprisonment of family members, etc. Their young minds often find it difficult to concentrate on their studies for any length of time.
All of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Often, school meals are the only food they eat in a day. Concentration and putting forth the energy needed for learning is difficult, although they are curious. My students crave new experiences and information.
My students like to experiment with different types of technology and media. I love watching them make connections in our ELA center activities.
My Project
Our flexible seating classroom is constantly under construction. We recently had the good fortune to have a project funded for a new, round table. The table is considered a "floor" table. While it has legs, they are extremely short. The idea is that the kids sit on the floor.
I would rather my students not have to sit directly on the floor.
Therefore, I feel that these flex-space floor seats will make them feel worthy while they learn. They can adjust the chairs so that they can extend their legs, or sit criss-cross applesauce and have back support.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
