This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC, where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, all students with or without Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are provided a positive learning environment that addresses both their academic and social emotional needs as well as embrace their strengths; while giving them a sense of belonging.
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics or have behavioral challenges; and will benefit tremendously from additional hands-on learning activities.
It should be noted, however, that all of our students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new, and have so much opportunity for growth and the potential for excellence, if provided good, daily instruction with the appropriate resources!
Flashcards and games reinforce learning in the Kindergarten classroom. In the early grades, its important to make learning fun in order to engage all students in their academics. Therefore, frequently, our Kindergarten Team makes flashcards, games, or books for student usage in both the classroom and at home. Often, these activities revolve around high frequency words, reading comprehension, number bonds, and addition/subtraction facts.
Often flashcards and games allow our students to interact with information in a way that makes the information easier to retain and/or recall.
Flashcards and games are versatile; and can be used for either memory, matching, or passing games. In addition, these flashcards will not only be used in the Kindergarten classroom, but also sent home for more reinforcement (learning at home) of a concept taught in the classroom.
In closing, Kindergarten is the foundation of K-12 learning; and research has shown that our students benefit tremendously from hands-on activities that promote learning. In this day and age, our Kindergartners must be both prepared and equipped for first grade and beyond. That being the case, your generous donations are an investment in our Kindergarteners' future!
