My students need a large varied collection of refreshed and newly published books in our classroom library chosen by them. This is a vital ingredient to creating and growing lifelong readers!
As students enter my classroom, I want them to be surrounded by books that make them want to read. My fourth graders are a diverse group of students. I have several special education students, as well as general education students, some are below grade level readers, some are reading on grade level and some are above grade level readers. I would like them to become amazing, wild readers this year.
My students need new and exciting books to read to grow as readers and to introduce them to new vocabulary as 25% are considered reading below grade level expectations at this time.
I would like to see their stamina and fluency blossom this year. As their teacher I want to surround them with books to create a reading paradise, so they develop into lifelong learners and readers.
My Project
The resources from this project will help create a reading environment in our classroom where students can practice their independent reading with a wide variety of new books many chosen by them to fill our shelves. Graphic novels were top on their list with books from the Bone Series, Bad Guy Series as and The New Babysitters Club Graphic Novels. Sisters Grimm books will appeal to the students who have a passion for reading fantasy. The finger flash lights will bring fun and excitement to independent reading with the lights out!
Research tells us that students in classrooms with well designed classroom libraries spend more time reading and exhibit higher levels of reading achievement.
These books chosen by them will help build a reading culture that fosters students who want to read more books at their interest level and at their own pace because they will not be due back to the library until they finish reading.
My students need to find their just right book so that their hearts and minds are begging for more!
