Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an 8th grade mathematics teacher in Brooklyn, New York in a middle school. This is my third year teaching and one of my key beliefs is that students should be exposed to as much technology as possible but only in the most appropriate settings. Currently, I am interested in creating "Monthly Math Newsletters" with my students so that they can incorporate writing and their math knowledge, problem solving and critical thinking abilities in a published format - one that they can showcase to their classmates and their parents. However, although my school possesses a computer lab, storage drives, such as 1 GB flash drives, are not readily available to students to save their work and transport it home for editing. Additionally, due to supply shortages, my class desperately needs copy paper for classroom purposes but mainly for printing and copying their published newsletter. My hope is that this endeavor of creating "Monthly Math Newsletters" will get students engaged in the mathematical process and begin to see it not as just a set of procedures or rules, but as a subject that affects all parts of their life and can be shared with their family as well. Within the newsletter, I hope to have sections dedicated to "What We're Learning, "A Letter From the Teacher," "Dear Mathematician" (math advice column), and several games and puzzles. I truly believe that this project would benefit students and help enrich the lessons that I teach in the classroom as well as improve their ability to write and create a unique mathematical context for their lives.
