My Students

I love math and so do my third graders! Together we tackle all kinds of real-world problems, from measuring our classroom to converting recipes to different numbers of servings. Through this meaningful work, my students come to have a deep understanding and appreciation of the relationships among numbers.

My students attend a small, urban, public elementary school in New York.

They will stay with me for both third and fourth grades, and I'm really looking forward to working with them for the next two years. They are an extremely diverse group, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, and special education needs.

My Project

It's imperative that my students memorize their times tables in third grade. First, we will do many activities to ensure they understand the conceptual aspects of multiplication. But I have found over my fifteen years of teaching that not only understanding the concepts, but having the multiplication facts at one's fingertips is essential for doing higher multiplication and division, fractions, measurement conversion, and many other areas of math. I will be teaching the kids many strategies for memorizing the times tables, from singing songs to using mnemonic devices. Flash cards are another great tool. I have a couple of sets of flash cards in the classroom, and the kids really enjoy quizzing themselves and each other, sorting the cards into different categories, and doing other activities that help them learn the facts by heart.

When each child has his or her own set of flash cards, they will have a reliable tool always available to help them practice their times tables.

Whether on their subway commute to school, lining up for lunch, or during free choice times, my students will have the opportunity to solidify their knowledge of these math facts. Knowing their times tables by heart will open up the world of more advanced math and empower my students to embrace that world.
