This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a very vibrant, diverse group of English Language Learners from across the world. Many of my students are refugees from Syria, Sudan, and Afghanistan. I also have students who are from Venezuela, Honduras, Mexico, and El Salvador. My school is a Title I school that is located in Tennessee. Many of my students are at or below poverty level, while others have special needs and/or are English language learners. I hope that by giving them a safe, engaging, and challenging classroom community that they will become lifetime learners.
My Project
Our classroom library is in desperate need of an update. These materials will connect with the students' interests and some of the current issues they are facing. This is why I have requested books that students will be able to connect with the characters and their interests.
I want the students to develop a deep passion for reading.
One of the ways to do that is to have books that spark their interests. The books that I have requested ("Schooled" and "The Wild Robot") are popular books that the students will enjoy reading. I know having current novels in the classroom will get the students excited to read.
A lot of the students do not have access to quality diverse books. These books will make a difference in my students' learning because they will have the opportunity to make connections and develop a love of reading. These books will help build a classroom culture for the love of literacy. This will in turn drastically improve their reading comprehension.
