Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Phonemes are the smallest parts of words. But can you read if you have difficulty identifying them? No way!

Our first grade class is a part of a charter school located in Paterson, NJ.

It is considered to be a transition class, as our students are below grade level. They are students that would traditionally have been retained in kindergarten. The goal of our classroom is to build them up so that they will be on a second grade level at the end of the year.

My Project

Students in our transitional first grade classroom frequently struggle to learn phonemes or the smallest units of words. Phonemic awareness is an essential component necessary to be a successful reader. If our students receive the Listen Up Center and the Foundational Skills cards, they will be able to work in small groups to identify sounds, to practice blending which will help them to become stronger readers.

A donation to our project will help our students learn the foundational sounds they are currently struggling to learn.

Without mastering these sounds, the gaps in their learning will increase as the years progress.
