My Students

"Don't make the best of what you've got, make what you've got the best." We are on our way to becoming the best, but need more tools. After our first Donors Choose project my students have amplified their curiosities more than expected and are in a position to continue expansive growth.

My students are bright and curious, making their way as best they can given limited resources.

My school makes efforts to provide but budgeting restrictions are keeping them from advancing as well as they can. The school services over eight hundred students from ages 3-15, many of whom spend nine years within the building. It is shocking to an outsider to observe the lack of technology available in this educational age. Some teachers have access to SMART boards or Promethean boards however these technologies are the few that remain in "working" order after many years of use. Projectors are old and struggle to function, computers are slow if they work, just two weeks ago the speakers in my room died in the middle of showing a video.

My Project

Getting my students access to reliable and updated technology will greatly assist them on conscious and subconscious levels. My first Donors Choose project got us a white board, a laptop, and an interactive projector plug in. With these items there has been a noticeable difference in the pacing and engagement of the students, so much so that they themselves have commented on their improvements. Consciously, receiving net-books will allow the students to access limitless resources as opposed to our current lacking supply of one textbook per two students that has been a major hold up. How can just five net-books make a difference? Differentiated instruction, class splitting and small group projects, rotated station learning...the potential is high. This is also merely the beginning. If we can grow and obtain five net-books now, five next year, and continue that trend, we will have a rotating supply of usable technology that will also contribute to increased engagement.

Updating technology and access to resources will give my students a greater chance at success.

It will help them achieve more, explore more, and grow more. I have been bringing a group of 5-10 students to my room for lunch each day, with 5 net-books they can explore and answer their own questions instead of relying on what I know alone. I have envisioned beginning an exploration club for extra-curricular learning; that would now be possible. The students want to learn, they just need tools.
