Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Regardless of the many efforts and support out on the field, obesity, hypertension, heart disease, and other health related conditions continue to be major issues affecting our students. Many times this is due to the lack of resources and movement.

In New York City classroom are crowed, making it challenging to reach and target our students.

I am currently working as a adaptive physical education teacher with students diagnosed with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation, and Emotionally Disturb. They all enjoy physical activity regardless of their conditions and limitations. The end result is for them to participate and smile at the end of an activity. Our building houses 4 different schools, creating a challenge as we try to use the gymnasium.

My Project

In order for me to continue promoting healthy fitness habits, I would like to acquire some basketball equipment. Implementing the use of such materials will get students moving, help them set and strive for goals, release energy, have fun, make friends, and improve classroom focus. The portable equipment can also be used in different setting such as playground, and classrooms, addressing the lack of space. Students will be able to play in teams or individually. This equipment can also be adjusted to different heights and numerous rims, addressing the needs of the different population I work with.

The basketball equipment will also help students increase their motivation, self-esteem, competitiveness and the ability to follow directions.

Learning is signified when students enjoy what they do and smile at the end of each activity. As an educator, this is part of my goal and I feel that these materials can help me do that.
