Fitbits Motivate Kids to Get Fit

My students need Fitbits to learn how to track their heart rates, steps, and calories burned. They will need chargers for their Fitbits, and 2 Nutribullet blenders to make healthy smoothies from fruits and vegetables.

My Students

My students are eager, energetic, and scholarly. The school is located adjacent to a nature park and wetlands and across the highway from the coast. Enjoying the outdoors is part of their lives. My school is a STEM school so we have a rigorous academic program. Part of our science curriculum involves exploring the local natural community. However, about half my students are from nearby or faraway communities that lack such community gems. My students are highly involved in extra curricular activities ranging from sports teams to scouts to music and art lessons.

My students need more time to be involved in active learning opportunities to maintain engagement.

Their attention spans are quite short. Therefore it is important for them to have physical activity to prepare them mentally for demanding in seat activities. They need to discover the wonderful learning opportunities that abound in the local community.

My Project

My students have been enthralled by my use of my Fitbit. I showed them the information that I get from it in order to track my fitness goals. Immediately, they expressed great enthusiasm and promised to use them to help set goals for their fitness if they could have access to Fitbits. I explained about the Target grant opportunity and how it provided our PE equipment, and then they asked if we could request Fitbits. They even asked if they could make healthy smoothies in class by bringing in fresh fruits and vegetables from home and from our school garden. They are familiar with Nutribullets and how they facilitate the making of healthy drinks. They suggested a couple of Nutribullets to help make more drinks more quickly.

Having access to the latest technology motivates my students to learn.

By having Fitbits to share in class, all students will be able to set attainable goals for steps, sleep, and calories burned, and actually follow through with the persistence necessary to track their progress because the Fitbits will help to facilitate the retrieval of the important data they need. This will empower them with valuable life skills and help teach them outstanding habits for maintaining great health. It has been difficult to convince kids to follow through with the knowledge they learn by reading the Health books, but with the latest technology, they agree to track on a daily basis. We will really have lots of data to analyze.

What a great way to end each week by making healthy smoothies and analyzing our data to see if we are reaching our goals.
