Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are AMAZING fourth graders, who deserve the very best! They are fun, energetic and creative, and I love to showcase their spectacular talents. The school where I teach is considered "high poverty," so some students do not have the same opportunities as others. Everyone qualifies for free lunch in the Title 1 program.

Despite our challenges, our community is very supportive and makes our little school a great place to learn!

Although my students are not diverse in race and background, they are all creative by nature and very different in the way they learn. Our urban school is located in a community that supports the arts, STEM, and extracurricular activities. Many students come into school looking forward to simple things like taking a photo, singing a song, or getting a hello from a friend. For some of them, this interaction is the only positive part of their day.

My Project

Elementary school is an ideal time to get students excited about being active and healthy! Last year, it started with one student and his family who became interested in how many steps they could collectively take in one year. After reaching 100,000, I started using a Fitbit to help me monitor and track my active minutes too. It continued to spread! Students asked if they could borrow our Fitbits to see how many steps they could get! Their intense curiosity and interest has overlapped into this school year and inspired this Fitbit project!

Children have the gift of being able to inspire one another in many positive ways.

Their wish is to make Fitbit fitness a part of their individual and class goals with these 9 Fitbit devices. They have spent time brainstorming and have developed a circuit of activities around our large inner city school like stair climbs, duck walk areas, and even plan on painting their own walking track around our small green space area.

Nothing motivates kids more than challenges, competition, and positive results! By tracking their steps and seeing their progress, kids want to support and encourage each other! It started with one family and now this project might encourage all students to get more active and stay active. Thank you for supporting their important and healthy fitness challenge!
