My Project

Print-making is a magical art experience that many of us remember from our middle-school years. This project introduces students to the process, providing opportunities for experimentation and discovery as they find new ways to express their unique voices.

Building on a foundation of drawing and two-dimensional design, young artists will explore a new medium for creative thinking.

Our 5th and 6th grade students will be introduced to the art of the mono-print, a process of layering ink and paint onto an acrylic plate, and then scratching through these layers to create textural details. When their paper is laid down, and pressed into their designs, the magic is revealed!

Students in 7th grade will go full STEAM ahead with their study of the work of botanist Anna Albers. Our artists will explore Alber's cyanotype, a photographic process that exposes specially treated paper to sunlight, creating a ghostly negative image. The acrylic plates will be an important tool to keep our paper and objects firmly in place while exposing the paper to the sun.

Our 8th grade printing project will introduce students to the art of the lino-cut, a reductive printing technique that allows students to print multiple copies from their original design. Students will use the project to express their views on a social issue that is important to them. Through the course of the project, students will learn the power of images to send a message, while also empowering their voices.

When middle-school students are exposed to new experiences, their joy in learning grows immeasurably. As they grow up, these educational experiences create a lasting impression that nurtures a spirit of innovation.
