Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic 7-9 year old kids with a thirst for learning. Some of them are lifelong Richmond kids, while others are immigrants adapting to a new language and culture. They amaze me every day with curiosity and positivity.

I teach in a high-poverty urban school, but do not see my kids as statistics.

They are resilient despite hardship. When we read Harry the Dirty Dog, I was amazed. They asked, "Did you ever run away? Why'd you go back?" These kids deserve an education that matches their spirit, but need an organized, calm space where they can thrive.

My Project

My kids are just that - kids! They need movement during class and at recess. We also need to keep germs away so we can come to school everyday.

Anyone who knows an 8 year old child knows they are bursting with energy!

Sometimes that spirit distracts from independent work. With the help of under-desk exercise machines, my most active kids can stay in one place and focus on work. With a few sports supplies, they can exercise at recess when we play on the field. We need structured, active games like jumprope and kickball. And with a good whistle, we can line up quickly and get back to work!

My class also needs to stay healthy. I have purchased wipes this year to keep us going, but the amount of germs in a 2nd grade class outweighs my budget. With colds and flus running spreading wildly, I hope for a cleaner class. Wipes and hand sanitizer would greatly help our class' ability to stay healthy.
