Fishy Business in Our Classroom: Aquaponics Increase Food Choices!

My students need the AquaSprouts Garden to understand living things i.e., plants and fish in their curriculum. The AquaSpouts Garden will benefit my students because growing their own food may increase healthy eating.

My Students

My Pre-K students come from low-income families. Thee majority are bilingual in every sense of the word. They live in the south Bronx, New York City. They have little green space in their neighborhood. Even the majority of playgrounds are asphalt. Nutrition is a major concern for our families. The struggle to find fresh organic foods is epic.

My students are enthusiastic, energetic and curious learners.

They explore every type of critter they find on the playground, in the neighborhood and in our room. The children and families would welcome more hands on opportunities to increase healthy easting.

The children foster their friendships with kind words and sharing the materials in our classroom.

My Project

Our students would love to have a pet! We are limited in the animals we can bring into the classroom. Fish are one of the pets we can have.

The AquaSprout is a great opportunity to see the relationship between two different life forms plants and animals.

Our science curriculum is about living things and how they change. In participating in the care for the fish the children learn responsibility for another living thing. By using the AquaSprout, the children grow the plants that someday may end up in their salad. Growing their own food will increase their willingness to try different foods.

Sometimes social emotional skills need practice; preschoolers need a calm place to recognize their feelings. Fish can produce a calming influence.
