My students need pencils, pens, eraser, folders, labels, glue and other basic supplies to get us through this year and help us begin the next school year.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know what it feels like when you are midway through the year and you are running out of supplies?
I am a Pre-K dual language teacher teaching 19 kids.
My classroom is divided in half. Half of my classroom is set up in English and the other half is set up in Spanish. I teach one week in English and one week in Spanish. My students spend an equal amount of time immersing themselves in both languages. Throughout the day they are partnered with a native Spanish speaker working to become proficient in both languages. Through this program they are able to learn about different cultures from their peers, and they are able to appreciate firsthand the diversity within our community.
We are a very diverse community in New Jersey serving low-income families. My students come to school each day looking forward to engaging themselves in activities and working with materials that are not always available to them at home.
My Project
My classroom is running low on supplies. My students have been busy at work all year and we need to replenish some things such as our pens, pencils, pencil sharpener, folders and much more. My kids rely on these materials to complete their work, write notes to their friends and have a variety of materials at their centers and a successful morning meeting. They also love to read around the room and make note of what they see. However, our pens are running out of ink and our highlighter are running dry. We can no longer sharpen the pencils because our sharpener broke so we constantly have to bother our neighbors. This is making my students lose interest and I need to get them back on task. New materials such as highlighter tape always motivate the students to get to work.
These materials will have a huge impact on my classroom because my district does not have the resources right now to buy us the supplies we need.
In addition to replenishing the materials this year, these materials will give us a jump start into the next school year. We are very limited in the amount of funds that are available to us. We are not able to get all of the supplies we need. Funding this project will be a great deal of help because it will ensure that I will be ready for September.
