This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember sitting in class trying to learn the alphabet and your numbers? It was just sitting there writing them over and over and repeating them over and over. If there were games to play and learn at the same time, wouldn't that have been more engaging?

My students are ages 5-7, in grades kindergarten to 2nd grade.

They are in special education so they have disabilities ranging from autism to intellectual disabilities to multiple disabilities. They are a group of the most eager to learn students I have ever worked with. They seek new information and enjoy new experiences. Some of my students are learning their alphabet while others are emergent readers who are learning letter sounds. They learn best through interactive activities and games. They need to interact with materials in order to remember the concepts being taught.

My Project

Most of our day is spent working in small groups. The students are grouped by their goals and work on accomplishing them. The magnetic alphabet and fishing sets would be used during these times. The students will be able to play these games and learn the concepts at the same time. Having early learners, some of my students are learning skills that include attending to a group tasks and taking turns. Learning the alphabet, letter sounds, and numbers are important and necessary for my students to make progress.

Working in a high need community with students with disabilities it is very difficult to come across materials that can be used in the classroom.

Most of the time, activities like the ones I'm asking for are missing pieces or just in really bad condition.
